First LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) project will be launched in Pakistan with Iranian partnership involving an investment of Rs 2 billion, said Nisar Ahmed Qureshi, Chief Executive Officer Mayo Gas Company.

Talking to newsmen here on Sunday, the CEO said that LPG was not only safe and cheap as compared to petrol and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), but would also help Pakistan cut its foreign exchange spending on the import of petrol.

He said that it would be imported direct from neighbouring counties of Iran while options were also available for its import from Turkey and Kazakhstan.

He said that first LPG terminal for its storage was being constructed at Mirpur (AJK) to cater to the need of the northern areas while another terminal was also proposed at Gwadar to expand its future needs.

He said that Mayo Gas had initially planned to set up 200 outlets in various parts of the country.

About this LPG, he said that it was most suitable for a country like Pakistan, as it was non-inflammable and safe as compared to highly flammable petrol and gas.

Nisar Qureshi said that various parties had shown keen interest in installation of LPG. It could also be used in all types of vehicles, including buses, trucks, cars, rickshaws and motorbike.

The Mayo Gas Chief Executive Officer said that its head office had been established in Islamabad with its auxiliary offices at Lahore and Karachi to streamline the marketing activities.

He said the Ministry of Petroleum had issued NOC in this connection and now arrangements were being made to import LPG from Iran.
